Blind boy battles odds, comes up tops : Hassan

His disability did not come in the way of his achieving success.

Bharghava, a blind student at a rural school, who also suffers from the rare Stevens-Johnson syndrome, a potentially deadly skin disease that usually results from a drug reaction, has passed the SSLC examinations with flying colours, scoring 91.52 per cent marks.

Bharghava, a student of Kattaya High School in Hassan taluk, who took the exam with the help of a scribe, a Class IX student, notched up 572 of the total 625 marks.

The visually impaired are exempted from Mathematics and Science papers by the SSLC Board.
Bharghava got afflicted with the Stevens-Johnson syndrome following the side effects of drugs taken on the
advice of doctors for the treatment of malaria, five years ago.

He had even slipped into a coma for about 48 hours. Now, his parents take him to Chennai regularly for treatment.

The son of H K Jayaram and Nagaratna, teachers at a government high school, Bharghava has tremendous memory.

But, due to his condition, he has very poor appetite.

Bharghava did his primary schooling at M Krishna Blind School in Hassan and shifted to the Government High School at Kattaya,  where his mother is currently working.

Bharghava travels with his mother from Hassan to Kattaya by bus every day and listens to the lessons recorded on his cell phone on the way to the school.

Bharghava told Express that his aim is to write the Karnataka Administrative Services exam and serve the state.
