The empowered committee constituted by Delhi University to solve the
problems of disabled students on Tuesday proposed either to do away with
structure of foundation courses or find alternative courses for them in
the four-year undergraduate course, due to take off in coming July.
It was the first meeting of the empowered committee for disabled students held in DU, after an NGO Sambhavna filed PIL in the Delhi high court on May first week.
The committee came out with few proposals, for instance, to do away with the foundation courses, give special tutorial class, and change the curricula, some modification inside the curricula or to train teachers by keeping in mind the special needs of the visually impaired students.
The members in the committee were of the opinion that among special-need students, the visually-impaired are going to face more problems, in comparison with hearing or other disability students.
“In case, there are no changes and they have to study the compulsory courses of FC then the teachers have to make an extra effort for the paper. How you communicate while teaching the visually impaired students is the biggest challenge,” said a member of the empowered committee.
In July, the introduction of foundation courses as part of FYUP, has been made compulsory for all the students and it has created inevitable problems for the visually-impaired students on science and maths.
