In
another painful story of how our country treats peolple with special
requirements, physically challenged cricketer, Gurudas Raut, who has
brought many laurels for the country, has got no support in his own
state.
He had put up fine shows in various places, including Pakistan and
even with one hand he has proved to be more than handful of a bowler.
Unhappy over the treatment meted out to him, he has shifted to
Nagpur and has got down to pursue his studies and the handicapped
cricket team of the state hs been deprived of the services of a fine
player.
His story is one of running from pillar to post, in search of some
support or assurance from the government, which never seemed to come. He
has tried to get a job in a government department, but his appeals
always fell on deaf ears and this, particularly given the various
policies that the so-called welfare state has for the physically
challenged.
The left arm of this all-rounder of the handicapped team had been amputated from the elbow downwards.
He had come to the state capital in the hope that the government,
which spends lakhs on players from other states, will at least, find the
resources and have the will to arrange for the studies of a player from
its own state. However, running from this government office to that has
left him with a worn-out shoe and not a job, as he had hoped for.
Gurudas was known to have been talented from his very childhood
days. He had also panache for cricket. However unsteady financial
conditions forced him to migrate to Nagpur, to a relative's place
inorder to continue his studies.
At Nagpur, he used to participate in cricket matches from the very
beginning. He happened to to noticed by the selectors of the handicapped
cricket team and was inducted into the team. He did not look back after
that and had made fine performances in various places, most notably in
Pakistan,in 2012, where he had helped his team to victory.
