Poor eyesight and abject poverty could not blur the vision of Lipin Raj,
a Kerala youth, who secured 224th rank in the Civil Services
Examination (CSE) 2012.
His success has set an example for several differently abled candidates aspiring to clear one of the toughest competitive exams in the country.
Fighting against odds ranging from poverty to a troubled family life to deteriorating eyesight, Lipin has realised his biggest dream at a young age of 24.
Success in civil services has strengthened his resolve to serve the poor, the neglected and the differently abled people in the society. Though his first choice for posting is Kerala, his second, third and fourth choices are all northeastern states as he wants to develop these states as a model for the rest of the country.
Lipin, who has worked as a part time journalist during his college days and is presently posted as an assistant manager in IDBI Bank, said he was an average student in his school days at a Malayalam medium government upper primary school at his village Kozhencherry in Pathanamthitta district. Childhood was really tough for Lipin whose father was an alcoholic and mother, a homemaker. In Class IV, life took a turn for worse when a sharp object thrown by a friend hit Lipin's right eye, injuring it seriously. Afraid of his father's anger, Lipin and his mother resorted to some home remedies as they did not have the money for proper treatment.
This worsened his condition and he eventually lost sight in his right eye. The injury was so serious that it later partly affected the sight of his left eye too. Despite this, he bettered his academic record in school and set a record in plus-two examination by scoring full marks in Malayalam.
It was at this time that a photocopy shop owner noticed his marks and encouraged him to join a college in Thiruvananthapuram where there were facilities to prepare for CSE. Lipin started working as a local reporter in a Malayalam daily to meet his college expenses. Despite all adversities and challenges, Lipin managed to realise his UPSC dream this year.
