Sukmaya Tamang, an 11-year old from Sarlahi, had never thought that even a physically disabled could enjoy playing basketball.
But a three-day Wai-Wai Nepal Wheelchair Sports Clinic/Tournament, organised by the Nepal Wheelchair Rugby Association (NWRA), has changed her perception altogether and she is now determined to carry on playing the game.
“I used to play basketball but this was the first time I am participating in a competition. I had never played in front of huge crowd,” said Tamang. “The clinic has taught me how to recover from a falling position and it will definitely help me,” said Sukmaya, a resident of the Sworga Bal Griha in Bhaktapur.

NWRA General Secretary Bharat Bahadur Karki was excited with the
participation. “It was our first attempt and to see such a large number
of participants is quite encouraging,” said Karki, also a participant.
He was also grateful for the support they received from various sectors
to organise the clinic.
Sixty eight differently-abled athletes took part on the first day, while other 53 turned up on the second day and 62 participated on the final day. American basketball coaches and Wheelchair Athletic Worldwide (WAW) board members Dan Altan Graig and Hacken Smith conducted the clinic. WAW also provided 11 sports wheelchairs — eight for basketball and three for rugby, informed Karki.
Fundraising/Organisational Development Advisor at the Community Self Reliance Michael Rosenkrantz had arranged the clinic.
Rosenkrantz said he has been utilising his spare time to help disabled people. “I take it as as corporate social responsibility to help the physically disabled ones,” said Rosenkrantz, who has been here for the last seven months. The Himalayan Times was the official media partner of the event, which was organised with a motto of ‘Promoting Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities.’
