A Wheelchair for the Beach

The summer, those who are wheelchair-bound, are going to get some help so they too can enjoy the beach and the Lake Huron shoreline.

The Kincardine Rotary Club, in conjunction with Kincardine's Accessibility Committee are purchasing a wheelchair specifically designed for use at a beach, in the sand or in the water.

Rotary president Jennifer White informed Kincardine council recently about the pending purchase saying the wheelchair has large inflated wheels and that allows easy access over a sandy area.

White says the cost of such a chair is over three thousand dollars.

She says the idea came to her after learning of an experience of a wheelchair person who used to be carried to the Kincardine beaches as a child but in recent years, has become too big for that.

White says to maintain that person's dignity, the club researched the problem and came up with the specially designed beach wheelchair.

White says the Rotary club has decided the special chair should be loaned out rather than rented out, however, should a visitor need the chair for several weeks, then a rental arrangement would be considered.

The special wheelchair will be unveiled in the weeks ahead.

White says to the best of her knowledge Kincardine will be the only community in Canada to have such a chair at its public disposal.

She says she knows of a provincial park in Prince Edward Island that has the service but she knows of no other municipality in the country that does.
