Vellore Corporation had constructed four sets of specialised toilets, each set consisting of separate toilets for men and women.Following an inspection by Collector P Sankar and as per his order, the Corporation took steps to invite tenders for operating and maintaining the toilets for three years.

“The local body’s initiative to construct special toilets for disabled people came as relief, but since they have not been opened for use, I have been suffering while using general public toilets,” said Murugan, a disabled man and accountant in a hardware shop in Long Bazaar. He added that the delay in opening the facilities is as bad as not constructing them. Meanwhile, there were complaints from the public that the special toilets at the new bus stand were being used by normal persons until 10 days ago, and they were charged.

Local Councillor of ward 59, A Pichaimuthu said, “Normal people were allowed to use the special toilets for the disabled persons by some unidentified persons, I went in person and enquired. It seems that the public was charged for using it. However, persons involved could not be traced. But, the lavatories have been closed since then.”

Corporation Commissioner P Janaki Raveendran said the persons who had taken up the contract were warned a few days ago to open the toilets for the differently-abled persons soon. She said, out of the two toilets in the old bus stand, no one had came forward to maintain the lavatory near Sarathi Maligai Commercial Complex. Steps will be taken to call tenders again to maintain the lavatory that had been left out.
