Visually handicapped demand restoration of phone services : Trichy

In a rare show of strength, about 50 members of the Lubra Blind and Disabled Welfare Sangam staged a demonstration in front of the BSNL office in Trichy demanding restoration of their landline telephone connections.

The group complained that they are now deprived of offers of donations after their phone lines went dead a month ago. They also voiced their anger at the telecom company for not restoring the lines despite several complaints.

Lubra Blind and Disabled Welfare Sangam is 180-member strong out of which 50 are physically challenged but with clear eyesight.

The leader of the group Thomas, a blind man, told TOI that one of their two landlines went dead from April 16, and repeated requests to set it right fell on deaf ears. "We are losing at least Rs 5,000 a day, since our main line which is known to the public is not responding," Thomas said.

In fact, philanthropists call the Lubra's number during important family occasions and offer donations of various sizes to the group. Interestingly, the disabled even claim that that they are going without food as phones are not functioning. The Lubra team usually prepare food as per the recipe given by the benefactors. "But we are starving for the last 36 days since our phone is not working," Thomas said.

Thomas said he needed at least Rs 5,000 a day to feed all the 180 members who are cramped in a 40 X 50 feet, ground plus two-storied structure with three bathrooms. "Now I make do with the meagre earnings I get from the 'Rajaparvai' orchestra that we operate. Please inform the BSNL contractors to do the needful so that we would get our daily food," lamented Thomas.
