Mental health centre for Union Territory

The ministry of health & family welfare has given its approval for the construction of a mental health institute on the premises of Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32. This is following the Supreme Court's direction to all states and UTs to set up a mental health institute for the care of the chronically ill.
The construction work for the institute will start at the earliest after seeking approval from the UT administration. While taking up a PIL relating to the death of 25 mentally challenged persons in a fire in a dargah at Erwadi in Tamil Nadu's Ramanathapuram district, the court had directed all states and UTs to set up mental health institute for the care of the chronically

The cost estimate amounting to Rs 30 crore for the construction of the institute was submitted to the secretary, ministry of health & family welfare for according the administrative approval.
The Chandigarh mental health authority under the chairmanship of finance secretary, Chandigarh, had constituted a committee to formulate guidelines for setting up of such institute and the proposal for the same was approved in February 2003. The administration has also earmarked a piece of land measuring in Sector 32 for the institute. The ministry of health & family welfare has also created 93 temporary plan posts out of the proposed 174 for the said institute.
