Video phone helps the deaf communicate

Rocklin-based Purple Communications Inc., a provider of text/video relay and on-site interpreting services, has introduced a video phone combining high-definition and smart technologies.
The company said the SmartVP will dramatically improve communications among deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals.
SmartVP was created in partnership with Redwood City-based Tely Labs and is built on the Android operating system.
SmartVP provides users with HD video conversations through their televisions and using American Sign Language interpreters. It can be operated via push buttons on a SmartVP remote.
SmartVP also enables user access to YouTube, Yellow Pages, captioned movie applications, entertainment apps and various text/communications services for the deaf.
Purple officials said they are starting a regional rollout of SmartVP, with plans to expand to other markets.
