Challenged students oppose DU’s 4-yr format

An organisation that represents physically challenged students and teachers has approached the Delhi High Court seeking a stay order against the Delhi University's new four-year undergraduate programme set to begin from July.

Sambhavana, the organisation, said in a statement issued on Friday that the programme doesn't take into consideration the needs and aspirations of physically challenged students.

The four-year format makes it mandatory for all students to study 11 foundation subjects. Sambhavana says visually challenged students are often discouraged or barred from studying science and mathematics after Class VIII.

It said the Delhi University has not made adequate arrangements for teaching these students mathematics and science.

Another issue being raised by the organisation related to access to reading material for students with disabilites.

It demanded a bridge course for students with visual impairment, in the first year, so that "they can become part of the mainstream education system".
