Karnataka polls: Aged and physically challenged cast their votes : Belgaum , Karnataka

Age and physical disability seemed to be no barriers to several persons in Belgaum district, who queued up braving the scorching sun to cast their valuable votes for the assembly election on Sunday.

Though the voting commence at 7am in the morning, many people had assembled at their polling station at 6.45am itself. The elderly and the physically challenged were guided to polling booths by their friends and relatives most importantly the polling staffs. 30 year old physically challenged girl Bharathi Basavanne Ganabar who can't walk, still managed to cast her vote at Gandhinagar School in Hukkeri. For the past 11 years, though she is physically challenged she has not missed her valuable votes. Though she was not able to stand to cast her at voting machine, the staff members supported her to cast her valuable vote.

"I have never missed a chance to vote, be it to the elections to the local body, assembly or Loksabha, I have never failed to cast my vote. Each and every vote is valuable and important in electing a candidate, it is our right, we should come and vote and elect ideal person who can do better to our society" added Bharathi. She is getting handicap pension of Rs 1000 per month. She was accompanied with her friend Gurudevi. The voters who were in queue were dumb folded whey they saw Bharathi approaching the polling booth. Bharathi who can't walk, with help of her hand managed to drag for nearly 100 mtrs towards the polling booth.

First time voter, JC Vaibhav, 19 year old, who is doing II B Sc, after casting his vote for the first time said, "I was very curious about how will be the system, but after casting my first vote I am delighted. It is important that everyone who is eligible to vote, come forward and vote for ideal candidate instead of scolding the politicians that he is corrupt, he is unfit and so on. Now we got opportunity to elect the ideal candidate and we should make utilize it to maximum extent".

Hanumanth, 82-year-old in Arebavi said, "Voting is our right, we should make use of this opportunity to elect ideal candidate". Ramps at the polling stations were of great help to the aged and physically challenged.
