These differently abled students are toppers too : Mangalore

SSLC results have brought cheers to this school in Vamanjoor on the outskirts of Mangalore city. Of the 11 special children in the SDM Mangalajyothi Integrated High School, who appeared for the examination, 10 have passed with flying colours, while one student with educable mental retardation (EMR) secured distinction.

Sunil,16, who has exemption in papers that he has to write for he is differently abled, scored 379 out of 425 (89.17%).

While normal children have to write three language papers and three subjects, specially-abled students are exempted from two language papers. Instead of mathematics and science papers, they will attempt Indian Sociology, Indian Politics and Civics.

Sunil scored 116 (out of 125) in the first language, 82 (out of 100) in Indian Sociology and 86 (out of 100) in Indian Politics and Civics.

School headmaster Ashok Kumar Shetty told TOI that Sunil took the examination with the help of a scribe. "While three of the four children with hearing impairment passed the examination, all the four children with EMR problem cleared it. Similarly, all the three children with orthopedic deformity too passed the examination from our school," he said.

The school, which is run by the SDM Educational Society, also made its mark in helping slow learners as well. While the school has 22 slow learners in its SSLC batch, 20 have passed the examination.

Other than Sunil, Nikil, Athesh Kini U, Nishmitha, Shruthi, Sujith and Shwetha scored above 60 per cent marks, while Sukesh, Sandhya and Ramesh passed the examination, he added.
