Welfare assistance worth Rs. 21.40 lakh were distributed
to 79 differently abled persons by T.P.Poonachi, Minister for Khadi and
Village Industries, in the city on Saturday.
Sixteen of the beneficiaries were given scooter modified and fitted with additional wheels to suit their requirements.

Mr.
Poonachi said the State government was implementing welfare schemes to
help differently abled persons live without being dependent on others.
During 2012-13, 55 differently abled persons in the district had been
extended self-employment loans and 416 severely disabled persons were
sanctioned a monthly assistance of Rs. 1,000 each. This apart, about
5,670 differently abled persons were being given the monthly assistance.
During
the previous financial year, 4,256 differently abled persons were
issued national identity cards and about 9,897 differently abled persons
were sanctioned benefits worth Rs.12 crore.
P.Kumar,
MP, R.Manoharan, chief government whip, M.Paranjothi, N.R.Sivapathi,
R.Chandrasekar, and T.Indira Gandhi, MLAs, and Jayashree Muralidharan,
Collector, were present.
Later, Mr.Poonachi distributed free laptops to 999 students of Anna University, Tiruchi.
